Dominique Dawkins McAlister
I am an artist OBSESSED with the art, history and politics of black hair. As a lifelong student, I use book references, highlight quotes and paint my interpretation of song lyrics I am inspired by.
I’ve been painting about identity and growth for ten years. What started as me finding and expressing myself through representational art has grown into me finding my divine feminine creativity and expressing my perspective on self esteem/body positivity, ancestry/motherhood & mental wellness. I love to learn new ways to create texture and play with light, so along the way I have incorporated modeling paste, gold leaf and resin to my pieces.
Common themes in my work include:
๐โ๏ธopenness and imagination, reflected in the vastness of space and sky
๐ชต๐ฟ the grounding strength of wood and stone.
๐ธ๐ things that grow, like fruit and flowers.
